Wines from world-class producers

5 Top New Zealand Chardonnays New Zealand is well known as a producer of world-class Sauvignon Blanc, and the Pinot Noirs from regions such as Martinborough and Central Otago have claimed their rightful share of fame over the past few years. In a way it’s odd that New Zealand has gained fame for the white grape of Bordeaux and the red grape of Burgundy, but that’s just a testament to the diversity of terroir that New Zealand is blessed with.

In due time, the red grapes of Bordeaux will establish themselves as some of New Zealand’s other great wines, but today it’s Chardonnay’s turn! Already on the market, if in limited distribution and sometimes challenging to find, New Zealand produces Chardonnays that offer the ideal synthesis between the fruit of the new world and the zesty, mineral-laced vibrancy of the old.

I'm moved to go buy some NZ chardonnays... It would be nice to have information on the pricing of these wines, providing they are available to US drinkers.

  • Kumeu River about £20 in UK, so suspect about 30 bucks USA. Don't drink it too young (like I did) either, give it three years (to win a few awards). (Like what happened to the one I had drunk when it was a baby)
Te Mata Chardonnay and Elston Chardonnay are remembered fondly as oaky but very complex and long.
The Cloudy Bay Chardonnay quite moorish, as is Morton Estate, which has a lovely vanilla ice cream aspect from malolactic fermentation.

  • Elston is a Chardonnay produced at Te Mata winery in Hawkes Bay.
