What to expect: Spain

Spanish wines run the gamut from the elegant, complex, and ageworthy reds (and whites!) of Rioja, to rich, powerful wines from less widely known regions such as Campo de Borja, Jumilla, and Montsant. Recently the beautiful, precise whites from Basque country have captured the imagination of wine drinkers world-wide, leading them to discover other exciting regions such as Bierzo, and the Ribeira Sacra, more famous for their distinctive red wines. No discussion about Spain would be complete if it didn't mention the fortified wines of Andalucia: Sherry, Malaga, and Montilla. Unique expressions of winemaking that span the range from decadently sweet to mouthwateringly crisp.

The Far from Ordinary Wine Guide is a great resource for novice and expert alike

Is this a reprint, new release or dated information?

I tried to get this book in 2008 with no luck.

I think its a reprint. There is no 2009 edition, although I believe there will be a 2010 one coming next year.

  • A wonderful, colorful resource is this book! It is a pleasure paging through it for information on the Spanish wine regions and individual wineries and their wines. I keep it on my tasting table with my 3 other favorite books about wine: (i) Wine, A Scientific Exploration (2003) edited by Merton Sandler, one of the great pharmacologists of the 20th century and Roger Pinder, (ii) The Art and Science of Wine (2007) by Halliday and Johnson and (iii) the decidedly more subjective Italian Wine (1982) by Victor Hazan.

I look forward to those quiet moments with a special wine (or even a simple, but good vino da tavola) when I can sit and simply page through any of these 4 texts. What a delight to experience the art of wine production by holding it in one hand and learning about its provenance in the other.
