Behind the Scenes at Ferrari-Carano

Talking with white wine maker Sarah Quider

I recently had the opportunity to spend a few hours at Ferrari-Carano's Dry Creek Valley Estate, chatting and tasting with their white wine maker, Sarah Quider. Sarah and I spoke of the unique terroir she is able to work with, including Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Alexander Valley Chardonnay.

In addition to discussing the wines themselves we spent some time chatting about her philosophy as a wine maker and how she implements her ideals. The proof was in the bottle; join us as we discover these unique wines and share our tasting impressions.

Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard

We kick things off by talking about the terroir of Dry Creek Valley and what that means for Ferrari-Carano's Sauvignon Blanc. It is still early in the 2013 growing season, but we get a sneak peek at how things are starting off this year. Sarah fills us in on how the weather in 2012 and 2011 effected the flavors of Ferrari-Carano's Fume Blanc.

Once we move into the cellar, Sarah gives a little background on Fume Blanc before discussing how she captures the wonderful fruit her team in the vineyard works so hard to obtain, sharing the details of production that go into every bottle of Fume Blanc. I hope we're not revealing any secrets!

Finally we get down to business as Sarah and I taste the Ferrari-Carano 2012 Fume Blanc. It's a fine expression of variety and place, and Sarah gives us an idea of how it differs from the 2011 bottling, which was the product of a challenging growing season.

Chardonnay in the vineyard

Ferrari-Carano's original vineyards are in Alexander Valley, and they still supply the top quality Chardonnay used to produce the Ferrari-Carano Sonoma County Chardonnay. Listen in as Sarah talks us through the character and quality the Alexander Valley Vineyard produces.

Sarah discusses the work that goes into producing Ferrari-Carano's Chardonnay, with a little pointer on the benefits of harvesting at night and other tricks of the trade.
