eProvenance Unveils New Heat Sensor for Wine Shipments

Hopes to use devices to ensure quality of wine from winery to consumer


March 2, 2012 — In a move to improve customer and retailer satisfaction, tech firm eProvenance introduced its second generation of heat sensors, made to monitor heat and humidity in cases of wine shipments, according to WineSpectator.com.

By tracking temperatures of en route wines, eProvenance hopes that their 2G sensors will give importers peace of mind in regards to the provenance and quality of imported wines. The sensors communicate wirelessly with smartphones, though only up to a distance of 4 inches, through the eProvenance app, which displays the collected data in either summary or graph format.

While eProvenance is excited about their new sensors, some wineries have reservations regarding their implementation. When a consumer’s smartphone syncs with a sensor, information from the smartphone is sent to eProvenance as well as the shipper, a move that concerns some Bordeaux professionals. Also, costs may prevent wineries from using the sensors in every case of wine shipped, Château Latour-Martillac General Manager Tristan Kressman told WineSpectator.com. eProvenance already has a 3G sensor in the works that will provide location information via text message.
