From the Extreme Sonoma Coast

Exceptional Chardonnay from Flowers Winery

The holidays are special times for sharing with friends and family. We’ve all spent too much time searching for those perfect dinner wine pairings. Thanksgiving was just the first in a string of dinners that can make the holidays a little more stressful than we would all like.

This holiday season, why not opt for the wine everyone loves that is easy to pair and easy to drink: delicious Chardonnay?

Sonoma’s coastal vineyards produce some of the world’s finest Chardonnays. Joan and Walt Flowers were among the first to focus on growing Chardonnay in this extreme coastal region of Sonoma County, high up on ridgetops just over two miles from the chilly Pacific Ocean. They recognized that the cool coastal fogs combined with abundant sunshine would provide the ideal growing environment for fine Chardonnay. They planted their Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard in 1991 and devoted the majority of their 30 acres to Chardonnay plantings.

Chardonnay is among the most versatile wines to serve, especially Chardonnay from the extreme coastal region of the Sonoma Coast. This cool climate ensures the fresh acidity that gives these wines the balance to work as a perfect foil for rich holiday foods.

Flowers Winery produces four Chardonnays. Whether you prefer the richness of the Sonoma Coast bottling, the refined elegance of the Camp Meeting Ridge, or the seductive power of the Andreen-Gale Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, Flowers has a wine for you. This holiday season treat your friends, family, and yourself to the simple luxury of Flowers Chardonnay -- though keep in mind some of these wines are so limited that they are only available through Flowers Winery mailing list. 2008 Flowers Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 14.1%

A bit buttery and spicy, with wood notes over pineapple, lemon and jasmine notes. This is fairly creamy and opulent on entry, with a soft, gentle edge to the rich almond-toned lemon curd fruits. The wood spice grows on the mid-palate, with a hint of fennel and some white pepper that yields to the steely, long finish. 89pts

2007 Flowers Camp Meeting Ridge Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 14.1%

Richly scented with notes of beeswax, toasted almonds and pollen and dried citrus zest. Very soft and almost delicate on entry, with a nice firm character that builds through the mid-palate. This offers up very attractive, fresh, and precise fruit peach and baking apple, with a steely edge and perfumy inner mouth aromas. There’s just a hint of banana sweetness on the backend and then a firm baking apple and slightly citrusy finale. Firm and elegant, this begs for food. 92pts

2007 Flowers Andreen-Gale Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 14.1%

This is gently complex on the nose, with a slight leesy underlay to the lightly spicy fruit that shows a hint of Rainier cherry and apple blossom under vanilla and coconut oak top notes. This is seductive on entry with a smoothness and yet a richness that offers up deep, lightly honied Rainier cherry, apricot and pear fruit, with a light almond brioche note on the finish. Rather intense and exceptionally long in the mouth. 93pts
