Taste one, taste all


The Global Tasting Initiative begins again. Back a few years ago I put together a rather modest plan, a plan to try and pull the Snooth community together by tasting, reading about and commenting on a single wine variety for a given period of time.

Well, as is all too frequently the case, a good idea suffered at the hands of a busy schedule, and the concept was shelved, until now.

So what’s involved you ask?

With our ever-expanding reach and the proliferation of social media it’s become ever easier to share content across the web, so it’s time to dust of the Global Tasting Initiative, and we’re doing it with an end of summer salute to Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris.

Don't worry, Snooth won’t be all Pinot Grigio all the time, but I will be tasting Pinot Grigio daily throughout the month. Every week, we’ll also be posting new content about the grape, the wines it produces and the regions that excel with Pinot Grigio. In addition, I’ll be hosting a small Pinot Grigio tasting here in NYC and look forward to connecting with any Snooth users who want to join us for a Google+ Pinot Grigio hangout!

We’ll also be encouraging people to taste Pinot Grigio, post their notes about Pinot Grigio, Tweet about Pinot Grigio and in general, make a lot of damn noise about Pinot Grigio all August long!

  • The 2010 Pinot Gris from Thirsty Owl Wine Company in the Finger Lakes is already an award winner. It's worth trying because it's so different from anything you'd expect in a Pinto Grigio/Gris. Very tart, this one bites you! I enjoyed it with lunch in the bistro Thirsty Owl has on property. What's also interesting is that we did see a lot of Pinto Grigio/Gris in the Finger Lakes this past weekend; I believe that's a new grape for an area that prides itself in Rieslings, Gewurtz, and Vidal Blancs.

  • At what point did Pinot Grigio start to colonise the space once occupied by Sauvignon Blanc as the default safety white? Make way for the great Pinot Grigio taste: a whiff of town gas, followed by about a second of citrus aftershave, ending with a 'long dry finish' as promised on the label, or rather, a blotting-paper sensation around the uvula. A lightly frustrating headache rounds things off, accompanied by an inability to understand why Pinot Grigio seems to have colonised so much of the space once occupied by Sauvignon Blanc - and so on and on at

  • The Pinot Gris producers of Oregon recently organized an interesting Symposium about Pinot Gris in which I participated. The event provided a good overview of where Oregon Pinot Gris stands today.
