The term “Talento” is an unusual one in terms of Italian wine terms, since it doesn’t refer to a specific region.

Talento is used to identify wines that are produced using the classic Méthode Champenoise or Methodo Classico. These are wines that undergo their second fermentation in the bottle, and the law further stipulates that the wine must remain on the lees for at least 15 months, though many quality-minded producers allow their wines to rest for longer than that.

The grape varieties allowed in Talento are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Blanc, and they can come from any vineyard that falls within a DOC or DOCG zone. The final wine may not carry the DOC or DOCG denomination, though it is entitled to. In Rotari’s case, the term Talento is used along with the Trento DOC, an appellation used for sparkling wine made from approved vineyards in Trentino.

Trento DOC is worthy of its own explanation as well. This is only the second appellation in the world designed specifically to identify fine sparkling wine; the first, of course, being Champagne. Trentino has a long history of producing this style of premium Methodo Classico. The continental climate and varied mountainous terrain has proved ideal for the cultivation of grapes that yield wines of delicacy, balance, and finesse. As with Champagne, only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are allowed to be used in Trento DOC.

While the Talento brand established a baseline for quality, the more stringent regulations of Trento DOC are embraced by Rotari, meaning that their vintage wines see more than 24 months ageing on the lees (in fact, all of Rotari’s wines are aged at least 24 months on their lees), while the top-of-the-line Riservas see more than 36 months. All this slow ageing allows the wines to develop a more opulent character and a level of complexity that few wines in the world can match!

Rotari Brut 12.5%

Quite doughy at first with a lightly waxy, smoky underlay over which are layered light apple and pear fruits. Gentle in the mouse with a fine mousse and bright flavors of apple accented with a touch of tangerine and offering some lime zest and a touch of bitter apple on the moderately long finish. This is quite a focused sparkling wine with refreshing acidity and clean, pure flavors. 87pts

Rotari Rose 12.5%

Quite floral on the nose with lightly tropical fruit and grapefruit aromas in a clean, mineral style with just a hint of toast.  Round and soft on entry with a rather expansive, suave feel and a tense mid-palate with light suggestions of red fruit over a core of peachy, lightly orangey fruit. The persistence of fruit on the finish is impressive and while this lacks a bit of complexity it really does have a lovely core of fruit, seductive feel and excellent length 89pts

Rotari Riserva 2004 12.5%

A little bit figgy on the nose with rich notes of brioche, sultanas, flowers, and a light mineral base.  This is nicely rich in the mouth, with good depth of flavor. There is a nice edge of peach fruit up front followed by a rather full mid-palate rich with lightly toasty, nutty cake dough flavors. The finish offers up a nice dried citrus rind tone that leads to an elegant mineral and smoke finale that echoes with a gentle sweetness. Refined and elegant in a rich yet friendly style. 90pts
