Salute! Maltese Winery Doubles Up at Bergamo Competition

In a competition dominated by wines outside of Italy, two wines from Delicata winery took home gold medals at the 2014 International Oenological Competition Emoizioni dal Mondo Merlot e Cabernet Insieme in Bergamo.

The Maltese winery's 2012 Cavalier Merlot D.O.K. Superior Malta and its 2013 Medina Cabernet Franc D.O.K. Superior Malta achieved gold status. Delicata was proud of their double-gold haul, noting in a recent post the dual victories add to an already impressive list of recognition.
“This latest tandem of gold medals b rings Delicata's total count of awards up to 94 which is an paralleled number in Malta and a high number by any winery's standard,” Delicata said.

A panel of 93 international judges hailing from 23 countries tasted 210 wines from 20 different nations. The Italian competition, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, normally features Italian wines. This year, however, was different. Judges faced a variety of choices from a wide spectrum of locations around the globe. About half of the competition's gold-medal winning wines were from countries outside of Italy, including Malta Romania, Croatia, France, Serbia, Georgia, Turkey and Israel.

Delicata was the only Maltese winery to win a gold medal. The winery describes its Merlot as a “full bodied, elegant robust red wine” aged in French oak barrels. Delicata's cab franc, the winery said, is a “young, robust, vibrant full bodies fruity red wine made from Cabernet Franc grapes boasting intense red berry flavours and a long, broad finish.”

The 2014 Emozioni is the first win for Delicata's cab franc, while its Merlot won a bronze medal at the 2001 International Wine Challenge in the United Kingdom.
