Top 10 Syrah Producers

And how they put their best work into each bottle

Alain Graillot produces what may be year in and year out the greatest value in the Rhône: his Crozes Hermitage. Another relatively uncelebrated appellation, Crozes Hermitage has always been thought of Hermitage’s little brother, you know, the one with weak ankles and a penchant for dropping balls. You might even call it the Rodney Dangerfield of the Rhône and with fair reason, a lot of Crozes has been thoroughly unremarkable.

Graillot on the other hand always delivers. Rich and slightly rustic with a tart, slightly lean nature, these are full of olive oily herbs and stem notes, backed up by ripe red fruit. It’s a wine that harks back to an earlier time, before early accessibility and fruit weight were things that winemakers worked towards. Be patient with Graillot and you’ll be rewarded with a pure yet firm expression of Syrah that has almost become exotic in light of today’s wines.

Paging Mena Suvari, this Graillot’s for you!
