Wineries That Give Back

Round two of wineries that are giving back in every possible way

I recently wrote an article about wineries that give back, that return a part of their profits to their communities, or to causes near and dear to the winery's heart. Within the comments of that article I found several wineries adding their voices to this select group of beneficent winemakers, and being that kind of guy I figured they should be rewarded for their good work.

So in a case of life imitating one's work, I get to turn the tables just a bit and give back to these who give back! In that light I give you round two of Wineries that give back: the crowd sourced edition!

One Hope

This is of course one of the grand daddies of the charitable wine scene. Totally legit with Rob Mondavi as one of the winemakers, and a full 50 percent of profits donated to charitable causes. Each wine has a cause attached to it, which gets part of the proceeds from the sale, but you can also choose which charity gets the remaining dollars. It's not only a good thing to do, it's also fun to mix and match wines and charities! With over $1,000,000 donated to various charities you can feel comfortable enjoying your nightly glass of vino when it comes from One Hope!

Bravium Winery

Bravium Winery is new to me, and since it was only founded in 2007 it's also likely to be new to most of us, so allow me to make an introduction of sorts. The wines are in the premium price range, and I'd love to be able to recommend them but without having tried them I'm actually looking forward to hearing more about them for someone out there who is. In the meantime I still will give their Sip & Give program a plug, since it's worthy of further investigation. I could spend time trying to capture the essence of the program, but luckily the winery's website has already done a great job of that!

"Sales of all Bravium and Artisan wines support Sip&Give, the charitable giving campaign that Derek made a part of the winery's DNA at its founding. Sip&Give features a roster of worthy charities that are funded based upon your votes. Put simply, we make wine, you drink wine, and together, we sip and give. Click the Sip&Give logo to vote for your favorite charity. Thank you."

Another winery with a conscience, Transendence is a small husband and wife team producing some impressive wines, decidedly in a new world style. Drawing much of their fruit from the Sta Rita Hills, Kenneth and Sara Gummere are producing small lots of distinctive wines and at the same time are contributing part of their profits to a worthy charity each year. In the past they've helped people affected by the disaster in Fukushima, Japan and have supported Project Transcend, a California non-profit working to help people in Tanzania develop educational and career options.

O Wines

O Wines was established in 2006, in Woodinville, Washington with the express mission of funding scholarships for low income women. To date they have funded over $175,000 of scholarships through the sale of their wines. There are a pair of wines on offer today, a red blend featuring Syrah and Merlot, two grapes that thrive in Washington, along with some Cabernet in there along with a Chardonnay, both from the Columbia Valley AVA. Priced at $16 and $14 respectively, these are very affordable options that can help make higher education affordable for some deserving young women. It's really a small price to pay to help someone make more of their life.
