How long can wine be left open?

I always seem to have a bottle in my fridge that looks like it's been there too long. How long is too long?

  • 367857ashtonkeefe Depends on the type of wine! And also how much you drank (aka how much air is left in the bottle). Chill all used wine to keep over night but generally you'll know when it is undrinkable. 3-4 days for white, 2-3 days max for red. (Maybe) a night for bubbles. If it goes bad you can still cook with it though!

  • When it stops tasting good. :-) I feel like 4 days is max, especially if you're just using the original cork as the stopper. It let's in so much air. If you have an air-tight seal, then you should be ok for a lot longer.

  • After those 4 days, can you still cook with the wine??

    • 905326Nathan Ophardt Sure! I don't think wine ever goes "bad" - the alcohol prevents it from doing so. It just loses some of its flavor as time goes on. Cooking wine has no expiration date. You can use it as long as you want. Sometimes, to preserve a red (and this is only rare exceptions), I'll refrigerate it to give it a longer life span. You give up some of the complex flavors when you drink it cold, but you'll also not notice if it is going "off" taste - more tinny etc.
