The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Contrary to its Vitis Vinifera sibling, Pinot Noir, Merlot grows in loose bunches of berries. It’s a fragile grape, and its early ripening qualities make it vulnerable to risks such as frost and rotting. That being said, Merlot wines tend to be Read more »

Merlot on Snooth

  • Chateau Robin Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux 2015

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for £10 from a shop in London's Belgravia ... ... concern and consists of 60% merlot,30% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon and the wine was aged in oak barrels for 12 months.I started my bottle last night with my supper of roast lamb. There is plenty of a blackcurrant, plum and blueberry style fruit but the t... • Tried another little "sleeper of the vintage" (in the words of the ... are a few), and being 100% Merlot, I think, it is quite soft, supple and luscious.  I would estimate the cost in the US to be about 20 dollars.  This really is a steal. Why did I select such a modest entry yesterday?  Well, an old friend from university days dropped by to sa... • Chateau Tour Bel-Air Tradition 2016

    Snoothrank:

This little known property in Fronsac flies under the radar, but has produced a yummy 100% Merlot wine for 2016: The bright cherry red robe and sweet, kirsch-like nose - slightly perfumed with subtle flowers like violets - is inviting, and the entry is filled with cherry and black currant (cassis) and finished by a creamy, medium but very satisf... • Sumac Ridge Estate Winery Private Reserve Cabernet Merlot 2017

    Snoothrank:

Fairly clear and coloration is of dark cherry juice, with legs slowly forming around the inside of the wine glass. Beefy spices, alongside deep currant, cherry and Earthy blackberry aromas, which lead into the flavor profile. This follows suit to the aromas, with licorice showing itself on the palate, to go with spiced berries, and Earthy oake... Read More

  • Canoe Ridge Merlot 2003

    Snoothrank:

Part of a stash from an estate sale. Storage was somewhat sketchy, but not bad. For $5 a pretty good score. Good ruby color. A little "funk" on the nose. Red cherry on the tip of the tongue, No tannin or acid to speak of. Bit of "funk," again, on the finish. Read More

  • Chateau Croix Mouton Bordeaux Supérieur 2016

    Snoothrank:

The 2016 Croix-Mouton looks wonderfully Bordeaux in the glass - nearly opaque garnet. The nose is more muted than some of its peers...with a soft cranberry and cassis. Smooth entry, hitting above the usual Bordeaux Superieur, with a soft warm, finish that exudes coffee and cherry. Nicely done! 89. Read More

  • Chateau Reynon Rouge 2016

    Snoothrank:

Another so-called "petit Chateau" from Cadillac, but there is nothing "petty" ... weight; the nose is plummy (Merlot) and smoky with a hint of lignin. The mouthfeel promises several years of future aging possibilities, with a spicy, vanilla-oak and cherry effect on the palate (middle). Finish is medium long, with considerable depth at this pr... • Chateau Larrivaux 2016

    Snoothrank:

This amazing 2016 Bordeaux vintage just keeps rolling along! The 2016 Larrivaux is pure Haut-Medoc; the scent of this wine is wonderful, with blackberry and cassis dominating. A pure wine with entry of tannic blackberry, this product is ready for drinking although it may last up to 5 years in the bottle. Buttery smooth. A fantastic buy. 91. Read More

  • ...on the other hand, DV, you could try a couple of the regular Bordeaux ... ... delicious and fresh (mostly Merlot dominated or 100% Merlot - such as Saint-Bernard).  The cheapest alternative is Chateau Pey la Tour at about 18 dollars - a perennial resident on the shelves year round.  The current vintages are 2016 and 2017.  All such wines ar... • It is a chilly, sunny February afternoon in Napa Valley.  Tasting rooms ... chardonnays, a serviceable merlot and a seriously delicious ribolla gialla shared that evening, but it was a 2016 cabernet franc from Detert Family Vineyards that stole the evening.  Aromatically charming and intense, a perfect blend of new world fruit and old world sp...
