The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Contrary to its Vitis Vinifera sibling, Pinot Noir, Merlot grows in loose bunches of berries. It’s a fragile grape, and its early ripening qualities make it vulnerable to risks such as frost and rotting. That being said, Merlot wines tend to be Read more »

Merlot on Snooth

  • Chateau de Pirouette 2016

    Snoothrank:

This modestly priced Medoc presents garnet brick red in the glass, with a wonderful blackberry, coffee and smoke nose. Slightly acerbic and thus youthful, this wine is nevertheless smooth, balanced and elegant; the entry is dominated by blackberry, cassis, blueberry confit and smoke. Finish is medium long. A fine buy for a Medoc. Purchased i... Read More

  • Chateau de France Rouge 2015

    Snoothrank:

Near Chateau Fieuzal - a Grand Cru Classe - this very fine, only slightly lesser wine is a marvelous bargain: a dark, almost black cherry in colour, the 2015 de France effuses brambleberry, vanilla and cypress bark on the nose. Entry has a slight tannic (oak) pucker, but softening, with great lift to the blackberry fruit on the front of the pala... Read More

  • Chateau Timberlay Rouge Bordeaux Superieur 2015

    Snoothrank:

Pours a lovely deep shade of ruby-garnet red, with rustic hues developing around the top ring of the wine itself and shows concentrations of suspended particulate, being only semi-transparent....legs are decent, but don't fully form, leaving rather an modest oily looking layer around the inside of the glass. Somewhat spicy layers of cinnamon, f... Read More

  • Rosenthal Merlot Malibu-Newton Canyon Malibu Estate Devon Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Interesting color that seems to be closer to prune than plum. Fairly fruity nose. Serious red fruit on the tip of the tongue. More than I normally appreciate. Not much complexity as the wine moves back. A bit of a funky aftertaste -- sulfur, I assume. I can now check off Malibu from the AVAs that I have tasted. I don't feel that for $15 I w... Read More
