Petit Verdot

Name of varietal: Petit Verdot
Common synonyms:m Petit Verdeau, Petit Verdot Noir, Verdot, Bouton, Carmelin
Parentage of the grape: Balisca (Albania via Greece or Rome)
History of the grape: It is thought Petit Verdot (“little green one”) predates Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux, as far back as the 16th or 17th century. It is traditionally used as a blending grape to add body for its spicy and tannic characteristics, along with Cabernet and Merlot and sometimes Cabernet Franc. Because it is a late ripener and a persnickety grower, not much of it was replanted after the Phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century. It is still used in Bordeaux, but mostly in warmer vintages. It has also taken hold in warmer climates of the world where it has more of a chance to thrive, such as Australia.
Characteristics of the grape: dark, tannic, blackberry, black plum, spicy, clove, tobacco, cedar, black pepper.

Petit Verdot on Snooth

  • C. C. Jentsch the Chase 2015

The Chase, which is mostly Merlot, Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon with some lesser ... ... lesser varieties such as Petit Verdot thrown in, is a deep, dark wine of considerable density and extraction for the region. The nose has Kirsch, sweet plum, and raspberry - depending on sniff; entry is viscous, luscious and just off-dry, with almond, vanil... Read More

  • Chateau Croix Mouton Bordeaux Supérieur 2016

The 2016 Croix-Mouton looks wonderfully Bordeaux in the glass - nearly opaque garnet. The nose is more muted than some of its peers...with a soft cranberry and cassis. Smooth entry, hitting above the usual Bordeaux Superieur, with a soft warm, finish that exudes coffee and cherry. Nicely done! 89. Read More

  • Chateau Ferran 2016

My first tasting of wine from this estate, and the 2016 presents nicely with a ... Kirsch-like cherry red robe (Petit Verdot effect?). The bouquet is of crushed small red/black fruit such as currant, blackberry and cassis. The slight medicinal entry with medium vanilla tannin overlays the plummy flavour profile. Opens up after 20 minutes an... Read More

  • Chateau Beaumont 2016

Here is another fine unclassified growth from the Haut-Medoc... garnet red in presentation, with an enticing and "correct" claret nose of cassis, cedar plank, and blackberry with a hint of pencil lead. Entry is youthful, but elegant and balanced with Himalayan Blackberry, cherry and vanilla; Finish is long, elegant and satisfying with well-inte... Read More

  • Chateau Bolaire Bordeaux Supérieur 2015

This is one of the best Chateau Bolaire with plenty of inky, medicinal Petit Verdot on the nose. The wine presents as black cherry, and enters with a certain chocolate elegance and finish - although somewhat lacking in density and depth. But this is not a fault. Delicious, reasonably priced Bordeaux Superior from Macau. 88. Read More

  • Errazuriz Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve 2015

The 2015 Errazuriz Don Maximiano (mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, but with other Bordeaux varieties) presents with the deepest carmine colour, shining iridescently in the glass. The nose is dominated by acidic wild fruit such as wild, low shrub blueberry with a bit of cedar shank (as if presented on such a wood). Vanilla, mild tannin, cassis and blu... Read More

  • Chateau Senejac 2010

The 2010 Senejac has matured nicely since it last passed my lips, and tastes like a 5th Growth rather than its Cru Bourgeois provenance in Haut-Medoc (there is only one classified growth in this region). Anyway, this wine has some tannic punch to last another 3-5 years, but seems mature now; lots of blackberry (Cabernet influence), grainy cherr... Read More

  • Keyways Vineyard & Winery Petit Verdot Temecula Valley 2008

Another wine of unclear provenance from an estate disposition, I have to say, though, it's pretty good. Lovely dark color with absolutely no bricking. Red fruit on the nose, but with a hint of alcohol. VERY fruity on the tip of the tongue--red bing cherry, red table grapes. It is almost sweet, although, there is still some obvious acid that... • Amazing varietal that has flourished here in the Levant area of Spain. Try Casa de la Ermita Petit Verdot 2006 for a superbly distinctive interpretation of the varietal.
