Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

  • Groth Sauvignon Blanc 2019

    Snoothrank:

Pale yellow color. A TON of grassiness on the nose. On the tongue, sure enough there is the grass, but, maybe, also, green bell pepper. I'm also getting melon and table grapes. But now, the overriding sensation is lemony acid. Quite refreshing. Read More

  • The Kendall Jackson 2012 Chard Reserve is a good buy.  Interesting that it ... such as the Reserva Especial Sauvignon Blanc from Cono Sur (2018/2019) and these were on sale recently for about 10.95 plus 15% tax, so very cheap by BC (or indeed any) standard in the West.  I reviewed it yesterday, and found it to be a decent, typical SB from Chile... • Cono Sur Reserva Especial Sauvignon Blanc 2019

    Snoothrank:

This wine exudes a weedy, woody grassy, herbaceous nose typical of the region. Entry is smooth and crisp (good acidity), with a melange of white fruit and apply on the palate. Finish is crisp, acidic and clean - exactly what this wine should be at the price point. Not much finesse, but a lot of varietal character and flavor. Excellent buy! 87. Read More

  • Joseph Mellot Sincérité 2018

    Snoothrank:

This blend of Sauvignon Blanc from the Valle de Loire by the reputable house of Joseph Mellot (Sancerre) is a tasty blend of grapes from anywhere in the Valle de Loire. The pale yellow colour belies a beautiful nose of musk, gooseberry grass and soft herb. Very true to the region and its style, this wine is clean, crisp, gentle and citrus-fres... Read More

  • Emandare Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2019

    Snoothrank:

From the oldest (and one of the only) Sauvignon Blanc plantings on Vancouver Island (Duncan, BC, 18 years old), this 2019 shows good, easily identifiable varietal properties on the nose with anise, grass, lemon, gooseberry and kiwi; entry is clean, pure and typically acidic (for the Island). There is a lot of gooseberry and lemon grass on the p... Read More

  • Oxford Landing SB (Marlborough NZ) was my introduction to this grape. Oxford Landing is a reasonable price for a surprisingly low % and an acceptable intro to this grape. However.... My real introduction was with Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. Revelation; nice sharp taste (not too sharp), reliable 'vintage' (I'm a newbie so I don't c...

  • After tasting the following Sauvignon Blanc varietals from the Marlborough regions of New Zealand "Brancott and Matua", I won't even buy any Sauvignon Blanc varietals from any where else in the world.

  • My love fo Sauv. Blanc is a relatively new one. I discovered the wonders of this strain while representing New Zealand's Villa Maria winery at Israel's largest wine exhibit - "Sommelier", which took place in November '10. I tried both the Blancs from the Private Bin and the Cellar Selection series. The aromas sent me dreaming. I had visions of t...
