Château Chauvin Red Bordeaux Blend St. Émilion Grand Cru 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Once again, this estate deserves more attention than it is receiving from serious wine consumers. Impeccably well-made by Mme Ondet the inky/ruby/purple-colored 2003 offers up beautiful aromas of jammy black fruits intertwined with licorice, smoke, and graphite. It possesses nicely integrated acidity, alcohol, and tannin as well as a voluptuous, full-bodied, layered personality. Already flattering to taste, with a long, impressive finish, this sleeper of the vintage will be at its finest between 2006-2014.

Vieux Château Chauvin:
It had taken four generations to craft a wine of renown and establish skills based on a meticulous approach to winemaking. It was 1891 that it all began, when Victor Ondet a prosperous dyer in the town of Libourne, invested all he had in the purchase of "Domaine de Chauvin",a small estate od 9.9 acres that produced a wine held in high esteem even that time.

Not bad, had a bitter after taste, so far I cannot find any wines as good as getting direct from Saint-Emilion.

Aromas of dried herbs, chocolate, black cherry jam, earth, and spice emerge from this fleshy, ripe, medium to full-bodied, dark plum/ruby-hued 2003. It will provide lovely drinking now and over the next decade.

[Barrel tasting] Pleasant blackberry and licorice character with medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Nice mouthfeel, if a bit hollow. Almost 89andndash;91.

This top-notch effort appears capable of rivaling Chauvinandrsquo;s brilliant 2001 and 1998. The color is a handsome blue/purple to the rim. The bouquet offers scents of smoke, minerals, crushed rocks, white flowers, black cherries, and some blue fruits. Powerful and dense, with high alcohol, glycerin, and fruit, low acidity, ripe tannin, and tremendous richness, it should be at its finest between 2008andndash;2018.
