Joseph Cattin 2017

Member Review by WineSplash:

I have always felt that the region of Alsace was the forgotten wine region of France. With Bordeaux, Rhone, Burgundy, and Champagne always in the wine media, Alsace keeps cool and quiet in the background and lets the other regions make all the noise. But Alsace likes it that way and enjoys its small town ways along with its wonderfully unforgettable wines! Located near Strasbourg, France and the Vosges Mountain range, Alsace has a cool climate which makes it perfect for grapes that like a short growing season and its cool summer nights. 90% of what Alsace grows are white grapes like Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Gris, and a bit of Pinot Noir for the reds. And more than 98% of the wines that Alsace produces is made in a dry style. And now for the big reveal! We discovered a lovely Alsatian Riesling this past week from Joseph Cattin which was worth quaffing about. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, this is 100% Riesling from the Alsace region of France. In my glass, this Riesling is day bright and pale yellow in color with a slight green hue. Intoxicating aromas of white peach, citrus, floral, with hints of petrol. Light and crisp across the palate with noticeable acidity. Vibrant flavors of fresh apple, pear, grapefruit, and mineral excites the taste buds! It was the perfect wake up call for my senses! The second sip showed more citrus flavors, young pear, white peach, and mineral leading to a long, zesty finish! Perfectly balanced with a very nice, crisp acidity. This beautiful Riesling paired well with my Lobster Quiche and would also pair well with baked ham, fish, shellfish, sushi, chicken, fresh goat cheese, or your favorite salad. 92 Points and an average of $18 a bottle.
