Simi Winery Chardonnay 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spicy apricot and earth tones dominate the nose with a touch vanilla and fresh leather which turns quite leathery and shoe store like with a decidedly floral edge. A bit matte and dull in the mouth with a pretty intense yet somewhat generic fruitiness. There’s some nice cherry fruit here though and a very gentle, rich mouthfilling character that has a certain appeal, particularly in light of the modest alcohol. Gentle and easy with decent balance and a fresh appeal. I would not be averse to a glass of this. Finishes with a touch of harsh acid and long, grapy fruit. 85pts

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. The hue of this wine is brilliantly clear, golden straw with glimmers of golden light — a color that dramatically sets the stage for what is to come. The nose is similarly demonstrative, with expressive tropical notes of mango, delicate pear, and bright stone fruit. Lifted aromatics of citrus, lightly spiced with toasty oak and hints of buttery cream add a savory character. It all comes together on the palate with well-defi ned, fresh, forward fl avors of nectarine, peach, and lemon lifted by a lightly toasted and warm oak character. The oak incorporates sweet vanilla, hazelnut, nutmeg, and smoky bacon characteristics, balanced with a delicate, zesty, lemony finish. Enjoy this 2013 Chardonnay by serving it with spaghetti alla carbonara, roasted turkey and creamed spinach, garlic grilled prawns or saffron and English pea risotto (Risi Bisi). - Winery Aging: 85% aged for eight months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, 30% new (20% French, 10% American) while the remaining 15% aged in stainless steel Total Acidity: 6.7 g/L Residual Sugar: 2.1 g/L pH: 3.49 Alcohol: 13.5%

It all comes together on the palate with well-defined, supremely balanced, and forward flavors of nectarine, peach, and lemon that are lifted by a lightly toasted and warm oak character that reveals itself as sweet vanilla, hazelnut, nutmeg, and smoky bacon. A rich, smooth, elegant style, with creamy oak wrapped an intense, tasty core of earthy pear, spice, citrus and a touch of honey. Gains complexity and depth on a long, lingering finish.

We made our first wine from Sonoma County grapes in 1876 and have been continuously making wine in the same stone cellar in Healdsburg, California since 1890.
