Villa Pozzi Nero d'Avola 2017

External Review:

A rich red grape, sometimes called Italy's Shiraz, Nero D'Avola is grown on the island of Sicily with great success. Villa Pozzi sources its Nero D'Avola from vineyards in the hills on the western side of the island. Elevations of 1,000 to 1,300 feet and clay soils give these grapes the balance they need to mature fully without becoming overripe. The result is a full, succulent wine with rich fruit, spice and deep color. A tremendous value, enjoy this wine with all of your favorite Italian dishes.

The wine itself is somewhat lighter in color than many heavier red wines, but it presents a lovely nose of blackberry, tart cherry, rich leather, dried spices and an interesting twang. The taste was surprising, I was expecting it to be rather tart based on the nose, but rather it was very smooth with tastes of sweet berries, plum and a bit of fig that transitioned into some candied apricots and dusty limestone midpalate. The tannins were somewhat mellow, lending to the round, supple finish that really capped off the fruit. First week this wine hit the shelf 10 cases were sold. I find it to be well blended, smooth and balanced with nice fruit notes. Acidity and tannin to be level. I highly recommend to my customers over and over and they come back for more.

WineMaker's Notes:"Seductively reveals a perfume of black-berry, white flowers, vanilla and a hint of figs. Opulent and full bodied, with great intensity, superb purity, and a layered, seamless personality. The perfect companion for hearty stews and roasted lamb.
